Short term solutions

The Friends Group has had a long discussion with the Parks Department about short term solutions to crime and anti-social behaviour in Tate Gardens. The discussion was instigated by the Parks Department who contracted a landscape architect firm, Scott Wilson, to come up with design for the square. The Friends Group had a critical reaction to the designs and proposed alternative ideas. The plans and documents below formed the basis of the discussion.

None of the designs or solution proposed below are going to be implemented. This is because the budget made available by the Parks Department is smaller than our (or their own) proposed designs would allow. Instead, a smaller scale development to lower walls is now proposed by the council. This is intended to increase visibility of the square for the police, and remove places where drugs can be stashed. The Friends Group has endorsed this limited proposal and hope it has the effect they intend.

This work will involve some disruption to the square, and the temporary removal of benches, which will be replaced in due course.

Short-term plans and ideas

Version 3 (Friends) Oct 2004
There was general agreement that activities and diversification were the best way forward, and that access to the library would be the main target of the plan. New working drawings were then drawn up.

Version 1 (Scott Wilson) Aug 2004
Scott Wilson, landscape architects contracted by the Parks department, put forward a scheme that would be developed in 3 phases. The group were unhappy with the whole approach of the scheme and discussion centred only around Phase 1.
