This
monograph explains the history and derivation of the name "Brixton".
"It
is well worth spending a small amount of money to understand how
Brixton came to be. You will not be disappointed"
- Local History Magazine
"People
are often interested to know how a place got its name. The origin
of the name "Brixton" is strange. Until about 200 years
ago it had never been the name of a village or neighbourhood.
It was the name of a "hundred"."
- from the opening paragraph of the book
ABOUT
THE AUTHOR The late Ken Dixon was the Brixton Society's Archivist
for many years. He wrote a number of books for the Society, including
this one. In other hands, an explanation of the derivation of
"Brixton" might be dull and lifeless. Ken brings sparkle
and life to a story which begins half a millennium before the
Norman Conquest.
