Our first
Brixton Heritage Trails were published back in 1984 as a series
of five separate leaflets. In 1990 these were revised and published
as a single volume containing six walks around Brixton and Stockwell.
After another decade of changes to the local streetscape, we have
prepared this new edition, intended both to keep pace with recent
changes and to respond to growing interest in our surroundings.
The
aim of this publication was always to help
people explore Brixtons byways at times
of their own choosing and at their own pace.
Many may find it more comfortable to tackle
just part of a Trail at a time, which is what
we have tended to do ourselves when
conducting occasional guided walks in the
area.
In
this new book we have aimed to keep the
simple style of Ken Dixons original
text but we thought it would be instructive
to add pictures of several points along the
Trail routes as seen in earlier times, for
comparison with what you may see today. We
hope this will give readers a feel for
Brixton both as it used to be and as it is
now. We also hope this book will prove a
useful resource to those involved in local
studies, from school children through to
adult education.
Mercifully few of the older buildings have
disappeared entirely since the mid-80s, but
several public houses which were once
familiar landmarks have been re-named or
converted to other uses, whilst public
conveniences survive only in a few parks.
Whilst accurate when going to print, the pace
of change in Brixton is currently very fast.
We have left space at the end of each walk
for readers to record their own notes of
points of interest and changes which have
taken place since we updated this book.
Please feel free to let us know of changes
which you feel should be incorporated into
the text by sending in your comments to the
address below or by e-mail through our
website.
