Talk: Markets, Megastructures and Motorways – Exploring the 1969 Brixton Plan

50 years ago, plans were drawn up to demolish the centre of Brixton and replace it with new multi-level megastructures connected to clusters of 50-storey residential towers. The plans were ambitious, and well-illustrated. In this talk from Nicholas Weedon we take a trip through this brazenly optimistic vision, hear how it came about, how it vanished, and consequences from it that remain today. There will be free light refreshments.

Local Heroes Craft-Connections Banner

Inspired by the Local Heroes initiative, the 17 individually made textile squares of the Local Heroes  banner were made during Covid lockdowns by the Brixton Library craft group. For this event, hosted by Friends of Tate Library Brixton, Marilyn Rogers, Annick Alet, Rachel Heywood and Cecilia Washburn will present the making and meaning of the banner, which will then go on to be displayed in local venues.
