SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Orchid Artist Nellie Roberts: North Brixton to Camberwell
DESCRIPTION:Orchid artist\, Nelly Roberts (1872-1959)\, lived all her life and completed thousands of beautiful orchid paintings at her house on Loughborough Road\, south London. She became the first and longest serving orchid artist for the Royal Horticultural Society. Her talent as an artist was first discovered by the Measures family who were avid orchid collectors and growers in the late 20th century. \nJoin Tracey Gregory on this circular walk which will take you past Nelly’s house where a plaque commemorating her life was unveiled in October 2022\, past the shops she would have frequented\, through Myatt’s Fields park laid out in her life time and up to where Measures family had their orchid greenhouses off Camberwell New Road. There will be stories of other residents\, especially women\, and a look at how the area changed during Nelly’s life time. \nFree but booking essential through Eventbrite here
