The Friends of Windrush Square (FOWS) is not a stand-alone organisation but operates as a sub-committee of the Brixton Society, which supports our activities in a variety of ways. The Chair and Membership Secretary of FOWS are members of the Brixton Society’s executive committee.
We are currently seeking help to run FOWS and need a Chair or coordinator. Do you use the Square, take an interest in how it looks, worry about the impact of events? Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to get involved.
FOWS attend Lambeth Parks Forums to represent the Square. They also discuss maintenance and care issues with Lambeth Parks department managers, bring issues of anti-social behaviour and damage to the attention of the police and Lambeth, and press for improvements to benefit the public experience and use of the Square.
FOWS are concerned about the over use of the Square for commercial events which then limits public access to the Square and also damages the fabric of the Square. FOWS and Friends of Tate Library Brixton (FoTLB) were instrumental in getting the bins in Rushcroft Road moved to enable disabled access to both the Library and to the Square to be reinstated.
Events over the past years organised by FOWS in conjunction with FoTLB include:
- Gardening, and Greening workshops
- Community Day 2016: Environmental gardening workshop , installation and Creative Arts indoors, Author reading, Certitude Choir and Tai Chi demonstration, Gardening workshop with Joanna Spilman. These events occurred both in the Library and outside. A FOWS Boxing demonstration with ‘Dwaynomics ‘and stalls, including Brixton Society Consultation stalls from Nubian Jak from the African and Caribbean Trust (A&C ) and South Bank Mosaics with David Tothill.
- Fun Palaces : 2015, 2016, 2017,with commissioned Father Nature planter installation and craft workshop run by FofTLB artists.
